Meldorf
>
Wherever you come from the Meldorf Cathedral greets you, even from far away. Situated directly at the former steep coast which divides Dithmarschen's old coastal moor lands and the younger marshland, the Cathedral signaled the direction to the seamen who were passing the coast in former times. Today, it's guiding you safely and in a friendly way into the town centre and historical market place.
The tourist information centre is at Nordermarkt 10. From there you can take a walk along the pedestrian precincts, the narrow streets and alleys made of cobble stones. Within a few minutes you'll reach the Meldorf museums, the houses of arts and
crafts and the two windmills in the north and south of the old town. The Cathedral itself invites you to stay and take your time for some self examination. Gothic architecture built in brick and interior decor remind you of Meldorf's great time in the Middle Ages.
The charm of this lively country town results from the atmosphere of the market place, where there is a market every Friday and the aura of the Cathedral and splendour of the beautifully restored residences.
