The Marsch
The wild North Sea has engulfed fertile land again and again. But especially in Dithmarschen new land could be gained. "Koog': (polder) is the name of a new piece of land gained by dyking. The youngest Koog - the Speicherkoog - is situated in front of Meldorf. It was only in 1978 that the new dike was closed here.
Among few areas of arable land the gained land is a breeding ground and food for sea, water and meadowbirds. The lush marsh ground is very good for cabbage, so it is no wonder that Dithmarschen is the biggest joined area for cultivating cabbage in Europe. During the so called "Cabbage" days in September and October you can find various tasty cabbage meals on the menus. The proud marsch villages Nordermeldorf, Epenwöhrden, Elpersbüttel, Busenwurth and Barlt offer their hospitality on all sides and definitely the warm holiday atmosphere you may expect in a broad scenery.
