Museums in Dithmarschen

Dithmarscher Landesmuseum Meldorf, the centre of the medeaval farmers republic Dithmarschen, houses the memories of a glittering history. The 'Dithmarscher Landesmuseum' presents the political order of the Middle Ages which has come out of the parishes, when 48 sovereigns administered and determined the fortune of the country. But the museum became famous because of its nostalgic department, that leads us back some decades. A village doctor's surgery, a classroom, some little village shops, a cosy village pub and an old cinema can be seen there as they had been originally. The toy collection is also worth seeing.

The second collection in Meldorf, the agriculture museum, does not only show nostalgic agriculture machinery and equipment but also the development from the rose garden farm of the early centuries to the modem agrarian enterprise of our time. The old farmhouse in the same area gives you an example of what the life and work of the rural population was like before the industrial time.

The rose garden with the old nice smelling rose types of farmers gardens and hedges tempts many flower friends in early summer. The handicapped organise the things für the visitors - a unique project in Germany.

The 'Dusenddüwelswarft' between Epenwöhrden and Hemmingstedt reminds us of the 'Battle at Hemmingstedt' in the year 1500, when the people of Dithmarschen defended their political independence.
